¿Es legal el trading de forex en Colombia?
The rule
Trading with international/offshore brokers is legal for residents - the SFC does not prohibit accessing brokers regulated abroad (FCA/ASIC/CySEC). However, any firm PROMOTING forex/investment products to the public inside Colombia must have SFC authorization; unauthorized foreign platforms operate in a grey/illegal-promotion area with no local recourse. There is no dedicated Colombian retail-forex/CFD licence regime and no local product bans on offshore CFDs. Verify entities on the SFC public register at https://www.superfinanciera.gov.co/ and the unauthorized-firms list at https://www.superfinanciera.gov.co/publicaciones/10108685/.
What the cap actually is
No SFC retail forex/CFD leverage cap exists, because retail forex/CFD is not a domestically-regulated retail product. Offshore brokers used by Colombians commonly offer very high leverage (e.g. 1:500 to 1:1000+), with no Colombian legal ceiling. As of the review.
Measured across the base
How many of these firms are licensed here
Of the 56 brokers we measure for Colombia, 14 hold a local licence and the rest onboard residents through a foreign entity. That is not the same as being unregulated — it is a different question, and the broker pages name the entity in each case.
5 of them carry a warning from a regulator somewhere. A warning does not change a computed score here, but it removes the firm from beginner selections.
Warnings and where to read them
Yes. The SFC publishes 'Lista de firmas no autorizadas' / 'Advertencias' listing entities not authorized to operate/promote in Colombia (https://www.superfinanciera.gov.co/publicaciones/10108685/). Example: on 3 October 2025 the SFC warned that foreign platform 'SmartSTP' lacks authorization to offer forex, CFDs, stocks, metals, indices, crypto and commodities to Colombian residents, after 20+ complaints of withdrawal problems.
